11. Peter

This was so much better than wearing a suit and being cooped up inside with all those people. The cool night breeze running through his fur, sniffing the ground to make sure he was on the right track, separating Darryl’s scent from other wolf shifters whom had passed through. Yes, this was why he had become a tracker in the first place. Just him, the wide open sky, and a criminal who was trying to get away.

His bear was usually excited to run like this, but that excitement was dampened over what had happened to Henry. If only he had been there to protect Henry, he could’ve had Darryl in handcuffs by now.

It was no use thinking about that, Peter told himself firmly. He should be thinking about capturing Darryl right now, on tracking his scent, and estimating how far ahead he still was.

Peter looked up at the sky, at the stars above, and tried to figure out what direction Darryl was running in. He had been going north first, headed for those woods Henry had mentioned. But now it seemed like he was changing direction slightly. Was there a better hiding place for a wolf that Peter didn’t know about? He had spent some time that afternoon going over maps of the area, but nothing had stood out to him.

As he kept running through the high grass, Peter grew certain Darryl’s initial direction had been a feint and that he wasn’t going for the woods. Why was Darryl going east? There was nothing around for miles except for Wethersville, a whole lot of fields, and some woods.

Peter stopped running when he realized what Darryl was doing.

He wasn’t running away from Wethersville, he was circling back.

Peter let out an angry huff, clawing at the ground. Of course Darryl was going back to Wethersville. He had shifted; he didn’t have anything on him, so he had no choice but to go back for his few measly possessions if he wanted to reach the border. Peter sniffed the ground and debated his own options. Heading back to Wethersville now meant abandoning the trail and running the risk he wouldn’t be able to catch up with Darryl again. Following the trail meant taking the long way back, and Darryl might have already left town by the time Peter was back.

He clawed at the ground again, frustrated, then turned around and ran back. He’d have to hope that Darryl would head back to the art gallery for his clothes, or that he would catch Darryl’s scent once he was on the outskirts of the town.
